Sonny’s Concepts started with a vision—then turned into a plan.

Founder Michael McLain was serving as a Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy while operating Marble City Pub in West Knoxville when he set out to build something different: a family-friendly pub with quality food, welcoming atmosphere, fair prices, and eventually, a beer of its own. He brought the idea to two close friends who believed in both the concept and the commitment required to make it succeed.

Joe, a United States Marine Corps veteran, and Jeremiah, a United States Air Force veteran, joined him to bring that vision to life. Together they opened Sonny’s Original Southern Pub in Fountain City — a veteran- and first-responder-owned establishment built around community. A place where families, friends, and neighbors could gather for good food, good drinks, and genuine connection.

The name Sonny’s carries personal meaning. It honors Michael’s father, Patrick “Sonny” McLain, known to everyone simply as Sonny. Growing up, Michael worked alongside his parents — his father and his mother DeAnna — running food trailers, a deli, and catering everything from large festivals to office lunches and local events. Naming the pub Sonny’s was a tribute to the man who taught him work ethic, hospitality, and taking care of people the right way.

Through dedication and teamwork, Sonny’s has grown into more than a restaurant — it’s an environment where staff becomes family, and where “Momma D” still greets guests at the door.

Now the story continues. Sonny’s Pizza and Wings marks the next step forward, with Sonny’s Brewing close behind.
